Baldwin Hospital on Top 100 List in 1996 & 1997

Baldwin Hospital was named as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation based on a set of benchmarks for hospital industry that represents a balance of high quality care, efficient delivery and superior financial performance.

Many people may not be aware of our history. Baldwin Hospital was made possible by the dream of one man--Anton Bergslein. Mr. Bergslein was a resident of the town of Rush River. He passed away on October 10, 1935. When his will was filed for probate, the people of Baldwin received a big surprise. He had made provisions to give the Village of Baldwin $20,000 to build a hospital.

The 85 year old Bergslein also left very specific instructions on how this should be done. His instructions were to use $18,000 for a brick building, while reserving $2,000 for maintenance. He appointed three directors of the project: Bartholemew Kunny, MD, Arnold A. Willink, and George B. Heebink. No provisions were made for the furnishing of the hospital. It was assumed that the people of Baldwin would provide for that if they desired to have a hospital.

The hospital opened for a community tour on December 19, 1936. An estimated 1,500 people toured the hospital on that day. This was quite a crowd considering the population of the Village of Baldwin was only 900 people at that time.

Mr. Bergslein's legacy is still being used today. It serves as the administration wing of the present hospital. The hospital has undergone many changes, remodeling, and additions over the past 60 years. But one thing has not changed, we still pride ourselves on delivering top quality medical care to the Village of Baldwin and the surrounding communities.
